HANDOUT FOR THE CONFERENCE OF FORENSIC ART EXPERTS, VIENNA (29.9.2025)
The text illustrates the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) in art authentication, given the considerable uncertainty experts face when attributing originals. It also draws a comparison to medical datasets, which are likewise flawed and often incorrectly labeled. In addition, it briefly presents further examples of how AI can help address questions posed by art historians.
The study appeared in the scientific publication "Kunstgeschichte Open Peer Reviewed Journal".
It uses 15 decisions of the Rembrandt Research Project as examples to show how and with which methods Artificial Intelligence can support art historians in their work. It also evaluates the accuracy of human experts in attributing paintings from Rembrandt's - without, however, further fuelling the nonsensical competition between human and artificial intelligence.
